I went with Caroline to the north of Antwerpen one evening. The riverside there is a curious and beautiful blend of public park, wasteland and industrial area, right next to the oil refineries.

Surprisingly, there was a church tower right next to the industrial area. Going closer to take a look, we could see that the church was standing on its own in a slightly overgrown glade of trees.

The odd thing, however, was that the church and the glade was in an about five-meter-deep rectangular pit, roughly a hundred meters side to side, like some glitch in the continuity of the landscape.  There was also a oddly cut-off stream with a small bridge over the stagnant water.

Inside the church were none of the usual paraphernalia, but instead some makeshift pews.

The church, called Osterweelkerk, turned out to be left as a monument to the lowest situated village in Belgium, that was taken down when the ground was filled as the industrial area was built. The bottom of the pit was thus the original ground level of the polderland.
